The Sunshine Castle is medieval museum/tourist attraction and function venue. It promotes history, encourages education and facilitates unique celebrations. Built in 1972 it recently celebrated its 40th anniversary as a Sunshine Coast Cultural Tourism icon and the most significant architectural landmark in Bli Bli. The Castle aims to bridge the gap between the medieval era, Sunshine Coast history and stages of Castle’s own heritage with a modern and innovative business approach.
A stand out landmark in this location this Norman style Castle, with medieval additions, complete with moat, turrets, towers and drawbridge is totally unique in Australia. The Castle is filled with medieval and historical displays and other cultural exhibitions that you are able to explore at your own pace in a self walk tour. Wander over the drawbridge into another time and feast with Kings in the Great Hall or squalor in shame in the dungeon. The Castle keep is a 24 m look out tower that offers stunning views from Coast to Hinterland.
An interactive and educational treasure hunt for children and the young at heart with the opportunity to get dressed up in themed head gear leads to a free treat from the King’s treasure chest. A recently expanded history shields tour offers detailed information on the medieval elements of the Castle and medieval history. A new partnership between the Sunshine Castle and well known performer and educator Sir Justyn sees the crowds entertained and educated on all aspects of the middle ages. Amongst other activities he regularly offers Junior Jousting, Archery or weapons displays and other medieval displays as well as a diverse selection of educational and historical talks and presentations in the Castles Courtyard and Great Hall.
The Castle also hosts themed children’s birthdays, a special school holiday program, weddings, private and corporate functions, special events and festivals as well as school workshops. A selection of talented local entertainers are available to add flair to all of the functions including fire breathers, belly dancers, wandering minstrels, magicians, theatre dinner performers, children's entertainers and more. In Partnership with the Underground Opera Company the Castle also hosts 3 shows of ‘Opera in the Castle’ on the last weekend in March and October every year.
Over the last decade the Sunshine Castle has shifted the focus of its displays and exhibits to a medieval museum, functions and events venue. Originally built in 1972 by a local Scottish couple to house eight original Fairytale Diaramas and some dolls, the Castle has grown over time and had three freehold owners. First opened as a Fairytale Castle it was then known as the Bli Bli Castle. The original Castle located on the David Low Way (back then the only way north from Brisbane) was able to attract a magnificent 1 million visitors in its first 3 years of trading. From bein the Fairytale castle it turned into being like a medieval themed museum where visitors can explore the castle on a self-guided tour to read and learn about history, castles and the Middle Ages.
Current business trading hours: 9.30am to 4.30pm – 7 days during all QLD school & public holidays + functions (@25 weddings per year)
