Software and Computer Science Internship - Visual and Performing Art
Software and Computer Science Internship - Visual and Performing Art
At AnalogDream and studio Apelbaum we are pioneers in the realm of transformative art experiences. Our groundbreaking "Cognitive Paintings" have redefined the intersection of technology, art, and human interaction over the last five years. These unique installations respond dynamically to their environment and audience, while preserving the emotive essence of traditional painting. As we embark on the next phase of our journey, we are seeking creative and driven software engineer and mechanical engineering interns to help shape the future of art installations.
TasksRole and Responsibilities:
- Collaborate with our engineering team to contribute to the conception, production, and software development of our innovative "Cognitive Paintings."
- Refine and expand the capabilities of the "Frame Designer," an online interface that controls the LED panels behind each "Cognitive Painting." This includes enhancing color manipulation, animation features, and integration with sensors.
- Work closely with the entire team to enhance the user-friendliness and adaptability of our platform, actively participating in debugging and troubleshooting efforts.
- Engage in a unique collaboration with dancers and choreographers to bridge movement sensors with the frame design process of "Cognitive Paintings" through OSC, enhancing immersive performance experiences.
- Develop a mechanical system to facilitate the movement of "Cognitive Paintings" within a spatial setting, adding a new dimension to audience interaction.
About Our Cognitive Paintings:
For the past five years, we've been on a journey to redefine artistic expression. Our "Cognitive Paintings" are a result of meticulous engineering and artistic collaboration, combining programmable LED panels with sensors and inputs. These paintings possess the ability to respond in real-time to their surroundings and audience, maintaining a connection to traditional painting while embracing the possibilities of technology. Through layering techniques and nuanced LED effects, they come to life, transforming as they interact with light and space.
The Frame Designer:
Our innovative "Frame Designer" is a powerful online interface introduced in 2020. Through this tool, users wield a digital pen to manipulate the colors and hues of light behind each "Cognitive Painting." This software, accessible from any web browser, empowers users to compose and interact with the artworks. The paintings incorporate motion and sound sensors, seamlessly integrating them into performances. The "Frame Designer" accommodates pre-programmed animations and lighting designs, creating a dynamic interplay between the artwork and its environment. All data exchange is facilitated via Wi-Fi using OSC.
The canvas, painted with layers on both sides, reacts to different lighting conditions. It reflects sunlight during the day and transforms in darker settings, revealing new layers and redefining compositions. With light sensors, the paintings adapt, dimming as daylight increases and illuminating as the room darkens.
Qualifications:
- Enrolled in a relevant degree program in software engineering, computer science, mechanical engineering, or a related field.
- Passion for innovation, technology, and the arts, demonstrated through personal or academic projects.
- Strong problem-solving skills and an eagerness to collaborate within a dynamic team environment.
- Familiarity with programming languages and software tools relevant to the role.
- Effective communication skills to engage in interdisciplinary collaborations.
For Cognitive Paintings and Frame Designer:
- Solid proficiency in C and/or React.js to actively participate in the development and enhancement of both the "Cognitive Paintings" and the "Frame Designer" platforms.
- A minimum of 2 years of active studies in computer science or coding, showcasing your dedication and foundational knowledge in programming principles.
- An eagerness to learn and adapt to new challenges, technologies, and interdisciplinary collaborations.
For Cognitive Paintings:
- Advanced skills in Computer-Aided Design (CAD) and Computer-Aided Manufacturing (CAM) to contribute to the design and realization of intricate cognitive paintings.
- Profound mechanical and dynamic expertise, enabling your involvement in the conceptualization and implementation of technologically integrated installations.
- Comprehensive understanding of electrical engines and robotics, a key asset in bringing the cognitive paintings to life with kinetic elements.
- Strong grasp of LED controlling mechanisms for creating captivating lighting effects and visual dynamics.

AnalogDream is a queer artist studio that emerged nearly two decades into the 21st century out of the increasingly technological and less and less fixed, binary world that we as a society are constantly creating for ourselves. We work at the intersection of contemporary art, performing art, music and rave, focusing our diverse skills and knowledge on exploring how each can amplify the capabilities of the other. AnalogDream brings together painters, programmers, dancers, engineers, audio artists and filmmakers to ask a myriad of urgent questions: how do we connect with each other and break gender and social boders, how do we create safe and intimate space for queer and non queer people form old and young - both through the artworks we produce and the means by which we produce them.
