Do you want to enter the world of international affairs? Are you curious about what relations between the UK and Germany look like in practice? Interested in a future career where you can make a difference as part of a fast-moving, high profile and international environment? Then join us as an intern at the UK’s Embassy and Consulates in Germany!
Who are we?
The British Embassy and the Consulates-General in Germany are part of a world-wide network, representing British political, economic and consular interests overseas. We have several internships available throughout 2026-2027, based at one of the Germany Network’s three locations at the British Embassy in Berlin and the Consulates-General in Munich and Düsseldorf.
We aim to be a diverse and inclusive employer, welcoming to people of all backgrounds. The senior leadership is committed to ensuring that we are a supportive and fair place to work. The Germany Network values are kindness, inclusivity, honesty, professionalism and responsibility. These values guide how we work on a daily basis, and all staff must adhere to them.
Main purpose of the internship programme:
During your internship, you will have the chance to work with colleagues across the whole team and become actively involved in a variety of areas and issues through analytical, organisational, communication and administrative tasks. You will have a manager to support you throughout your internship and you will gain insights and first-hand experience supporting international work across your assigned role.
In addition to those listed above, you might find yourself:
You’ll work in one of the following teams:
Foreign, Security and Development Team (Berlin): The team supports UK priorities in Germany focussing on Security and Development (strong political interest plus solid research and communication skills needed).
Events and Organisation (Berlin and Dusseldorf): The role places you at the heart of the Germany Network, supporting high‑level engagement, travel, and events while working across the Embassy or the Consulate-General on fast‑paced diplomatic priorities and contributing to the Ambassador’s/Deputy Head of Mission’s and the Consulate-General’s key initiatives.
Economic, Financial and Social Policy Team (Berlin): The internship supports the UK–Germany economic relationship through research, reporting, meetings, as well as event and admin support, requiring an interest in economic policy and the intersection of economics and international relations.
Business and Trade (DBT) (Berlin and Munich): Our mission at DBT is to boost UK–Germany trade and investment by improving market access for businesses in ways that drive growth, support jobs, and advance wider goals such as economic security, inclusion, and climate action.
Climate, Energy and Global Issues team (Berlin): The role supports UK–Germany cooperation on climate, energy, and global issues by analysing partnership opportunities, assisting with events, visits, and stakeholder engagement.
Science and Technology (Berlin): The role supports UK-Germany collaboration in science, technology and innovation by tracking German developments, communicating UK strengths, and assisting the Science & Technology team with projects, events, visits and wider diplomatic engagement across fields from AI to climate and health.
Don't miss out on this fantastic opportunity!
Essential qualifications, skills and experienceOur Ideal Candidate shows:
Candidates must speak German and English. They should either be enrolled in a German University or a University within the EU for the whole duration of the internship or they must not have a degree from a university yet.
This is a voluntary internship of 3 months (full-time of 37.5 hours per week). Mandatory internships required by universities (up to 6 months) may also be accommodated.
The start date mentioned in the advert is indicative only. Both the location and the starting date of the internship are flexible, and you will be able to indicate your preference as part of your application.
The successful candidate will be subject to security clearance.
Staff recruited locally by the British Embassy are subject to Terms and Conditions of Service according to local German employment law.
Visa/work permit requirements
Candidates must currently hold the independent right to live and work in Germany and be prepared to ensure that right remains throughout the scope of the contract. Please note that it is your responsibility to ensure you meet the legal requirements to live and work in this country.
Candidates must have pre-existing work authorisation in Germany in order to apply.
Equal employment
We strongly encourage students from all backgrounds to apply. We welcome applications from all university disciplines - we are more interested in your motivation for applying to the internship with us and the skills that you bring, rather than your background, work experience or studies to date.
We are committed to equal employment opportunity regardless of race, colour, ancestry, religion, sex, sexual orientation, age, marital status, disability or gender identity. We particularly encourage applications from candidates with protected characteristics. The Germany Network wants to maximise the potential of everyone who chooses to work for us, regardless of their background.
Learning & Development
All interns will be provided with a full induction and receive close support from a line-manager and colleagues throughout their internship to support them and their individual development goals.
The Germany Network and DBT are a rewarding and exciting place to work, offering:
